This is just purely a thought, but I've seen lots of talk around here to find ways to create a spellborn server emulator(not sure if any has been made yet), but I propose a slightly diffrent solution. I didn't play spellborn that long before the shutdoen sadly, but I loved the game, but it was still in beta form. I propose instead of simply trying to emulate the server recreate the base game. I don't think this would be a simple task, but with enough people behind it, we could do it. I myself would be willing to do the programming, all I would need is some help on that and then the other game files.

Honestly it's been over a year, I doubt any company would pick it up any more, it seems to have fallen to the background, so a fan made version seems to be the way to go so we can see new content and things that were never actually able to be added befor the shutdown. I want to know your guys' thoughts and opinions on doing this?

Acording to the license agreement, it's not allowed to reverse engeneer the game. What is allowed or not covered in the agreement is to have a look into the client files. Our team recently managed to have a look in the maps but not be able yet to move arround via the client. No programing or disassembly is needed to acheive this. just renaming some files and use other files from the client as replacements

Well it was an idea, I honestly haven't looked at the game much and would have to look at the licence agreement again. I also have a question, if you manage to get into the maps with the client, how do you plan on connecting to some of server?

If I could bypass the login process without altering the client, I would but I have not enought programming knowledge to do so. I guess assigning a different ip in one of the RC files could redirect trafic to a different server but I do not know if that's all you need. As stated in one of the RC files the Server RC files never were distributed with the client so I assume that in those files that we miss, more usefull info could be found about the network topology.

Sure, you can change the client to connect to another IP, but all you know is what the client sends to the server.

For implementing the server, you'd have to guess what the server will answer.

That is like trying to "reverse engineer" a cocktail from a bar, where all you have is the order you have placed, the drink never arrives because the bar has already shut down.

WoW has private servers because the server files were leaked. I don't know of any game where fans have managed to recreate the server part without any leaked files.

Indeed if ever the server files were to leak, it would be mutch easyer but not the only solution. A different solution woud just be to leak the uncompiled versions of the dll, exe and unreal files. I'd rather have a official party with all rights and licenses bring the compagny back to life. By the way has anyone found who realy is entitled to sell the game or publishing rights?

Well going along that line of thought you could get a reflector to reproduced the base code of the dlls, etc. It probably wouldn't look pretty and may take some time to go through but you could go through it and find out how to create the server based on what the client requests in the code

The rights are probably still with the group of investors that originally started the spellborn project. So the rights are probably with Spellborn NV; but that company's more like a bunch of patents and code without any people working for it.

I think Frogster also have some rights for Spellborn somewhere.

It's quite complex

It's quite complex

Frogster only had publishing rights in some European countries, Frogster Asia had the rights to publish the game in Asia. The bonds between those companies have somewhat been severed and the rights have probably returned to Spellborn NV by now. So they can try to resell them to someone else (if they still care).
